Former Congressman Matt Gaetz has proposed the idea of rejoining Congress to expose lawmakers' MeToo settlements that were paid using taxpayer money before resigning again. This plan follows a secret vote by the House Ethics Committee to release a damaging lawfare report on him. Gaetz had previously resigned after being nominated by President Trump as US Attorney General, but he was elected again to the 119th Congress.
Gaetz's plan involves showing up to Congress on January 3, 2025, participating in the Speaker election, taking the oath of office, and then filing a motion to expose all MeToo settlements financed by public funds, including those of former members, before resigning and starting his program at OANN on January 6, 2025.
During Trump's first term, he threatened to name Congress members who used taxpayer money to settle sexual harassment lawsuits. The issue of sexual harassment is widespread in Congress, with female lawmakers and aides reportedly keeping a list of men known for inappropriate behavior. Representative Jackie Speier mentioned that taxpayers have contributed over $15 million to settle such lawsuits.
In 2017, the Congressional Office of Compliance disclosed a yearly summary of harassment settlements and other awards, although without revealing specific details.
