Democrats are criticizing President-elect Donald Trump for wanting to cut Social Security, but they are pushing a new bill that will actually reduce benefits. According to the U. K. Daily Mail, Senate Democrats are trying to get a Social Security reform bill passed and signed by President Joe Biden before Trump takes office. The Social Security Fairness Act aims to eliminate provisions that lower payouts for public sector employees, such as police officers, firefighters, teachers, and postal workers. The Committee for a Responsible Budget warns that this bill could make Social Security go bankrupt six months sooner than expected by providing higher benefits to 3 million people who did not pay into Social Security.
The Committee also claims that a couple retiring in 2033 could lose an additional $25,000 in benefits over their lifetime if this bill passes. If Social Security runs out of funds, it could result in $400,000 in benefits lost for an average couple. The bill is expected to cost $190 billion over the next ten years, according to the Congressional Budget Office. After passing in the House, Senate Democrats, led by Senator Chuck Schumer, are looking for a vote in the Senate. Meanwhile, Senator Rand Paul wants to propose an amendment to gradually raise the retirement age to 70.
Paul commented that this bill would speed up Social Security's bankruptcy, which is projected for 2034, and that it is irresponsible to expand a program already in financial trouble without covering the costs. Schumer presented the bill as a humanitarian effort to ensure that public service workers receive the benefits they deserve. Although it seems like an expansion of Social Security, it could result in significant long-term financial issues.
Democrats have accused Trump of attempting to cut Social Security, with Vice President Kamala Harris posting on social media just before the election claiming Trump aimed to undermine these benefits. President Biden has also claimed his administration will strengthen Social Security and Medicare against Republican cuts. Representative Hakeem Jeffries claimed Trump’s plans would dismantle Social Security and Medicare.
Despite statements about addressing government spending, Trump insisted this month that he would not touch Social Security. The Democrats' bill may lead to cuts and quicker insolvency for the program. It's uncertain whether Democrats genuinely believe this bill will help or if they intend to create future problems for the soon-to-be president.
Some suggest a less conspiratorial reason for Democrats’ actions with the bill could simply be misjudgment, following the principle known as Hanlon's Razor, which suggests not attributing malicious intent where ignorance could suffice.
