Florida Officials Say Federal Government Has "Stonewalled" State Investigation Into Would-Be Trump Assassin

Florida officials have accused the federal government of obstructing a state investigation into Ryan Wesley Routh, who is accused of trying to assassinate former President Donald Trump at his golf course in Florida. Attorney General Ashley Moody stated that the Department of Justice instructed the state to halt its investigation based on a federal law regarding crimes against notable public figures, which Moody disagreed with. Governor Ron DeSantis claimed the federal government has continually impeded the investigation and expressed support for Moody's efforts to proceed against Routh. He asserted that he expects changes after January 20th, when Trump will be back in office, emphasizing that the suspect must face justice and that the public deserves clarity on Routh's intentions.

In September, Moody's office secured a warrant for Routh's arrest after he was allegedly found waiting for Trump while armed. Following a confrontation with a Secret Service agent, he fled but was later captured on Interstate 95. During the chase, a car crash occurred that injured a 6-year-old girl, and Moody emphasized the need for justice for the girl and her family due to the lasting impact of her injuries.

The crash happened as Routh was being pursued, and traffic was halted on I-95 out of caution for potential weapons in his vehicle. A Secret Service agent reportedly saw Routh with a rifle near Trump's golf course while the former president was playing. Routh allegedly waited for Trump for approximately 12 hours, and evidence showed he had been in the vicinity for a month before the assassination attempt. Prosecutors revealed that Routh had left a note explaining his motive, linked to Trump's decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal, and his social media highlighted his support for Ukraine in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
