The Heritage Foundation's Oversight Project has committed to obtaining and releasing the audio recording of President Joe Biden's interview with ghostwriter Mark Zwonitzer, who admitted to deleting the audio in June. Mike Howell, Executive Director of the Oversight Project, emphasized the public's right to access this recording, stating, "This recording is yours. It belongs to you. "
A December court filing noted that releasing the audio would not invade privacy and highlighted the public's strong interest in its disclosure. The filing suggested that both Biden and Zwonitzer have minimal privacy concerns in this case.
In June, during an FBI interview, Zwonitzer was hesitant to admit how much the investigation by special counsel Robert Hur influenced his decision to delete the recordings. He acknowledged his awareness of the investigation and expressed worry about potential hacking, particularly due to personal content related to Biden’s late son, Beau. Consequently, he deleted the recordings for safety reasons.
