The Incoming Congress Should Immediately Ban Zuckbucks Across The Nation

Voters have given Republicans a clear mandate to address various issues, including the need to fix problems that arose during the 2020 election. Jacob Grandstaff argues that Republicans should leverage their power in the federal government to stop wealthy individuals from influencing elections through tax-funded nonprofits, similar to the actions of Mark Zuckerberg in 2020. The proposed American Confidence in Elections (ACE) Act of 2023 aims to prohibit states from using private funds for elections and introduce numerous measures to enhance election integrity.

In 2020, Zuckerberg and his wife donated $420 million to support election costs during the COVID-19 pandemic, but this money primarily benefited Democratic-leaning counties. Many criticized these donations as attempts to influence the election process rather than charitable acts. For example, in Wisconsin, a significant portion of funds was directed towards counties that heavily supported Joe Biden, creating an imbalance in funding between Republican and Democratic areas.

Wisconsin's decision to ban private election funding through a statewide referendum highlights a growing concern over such practices. Grandstaff believes conservatives should take this opportunity to establish a nationwide ban on private funding in elections to prevent future interference by wealthy individuals. He notes that the incoming Republican Congress can work toward this goal in a bipartisan manner, as some Democrat-led states have already passed similar laws.

Opposition to the ban may come from those who argue that private funding can be beneficial during crises or that it undermines states' rights. However, Grandstaff counters that the influence of wealth in elections ultimately undermines public trust and can lead to corruption and unequal competition. He highlights a legal case that criticized private funding for being potentially corrupt and fostering distrust.

Grandstaff argues that banning private donations is necessary to safeguard elections and ensure that they are not unduly influenced by outside entities. The ACE Act aims to restore transparency in election funding and prevent a repeat of incidents like the one involving Zuckerberg's donations in 2020. He emphasizes that maintaining the integrity of the voting process is essential for American democracy.
