Eight years ago, some Hollywood figures encouraged Electoral College representatives not to vote for Trump, labeling him unfit before election results were certified. Their aim was to convince enough Republican electors to drop Trump’s electoral count below 270. During this time, there were death threats against electors and protests in Democrat-led states, but these efforts failed, resulting in Trump's inauguration on January 20, 2017.
Currently, the Democrats seem less overt in their attempts to undermine Trump’s presidency, possibly to avoid hypocrisy after spending years alleging he incited an insurrection during his presidency. They seem to accept that they cannot defeat Trump’s return in 2025 but some still believe they must try.
A recent article in The Hill cites Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, arguing that Trump could be disqualified from holding office due to insurrection against the Constitution. The authors reference Trump’s second impeachment trial where he was accused of inciting insurrection, although they ignore that the Senate did not convict him.
They also cite a ruling from the Colorado Supreme Court that aimed to remove Trump from the ballot based on the 14th Amendment, yet the U. S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of Trump, stating that states do not have the authority to enforce Section 3 for federal offices like the presidency. The authors contend the Supreme Court's inaction allows Congress to reject electoral votes when they convene, declaring it a nonreviewable political question.
They suggest that Congress should reject Trump’s electoral votes under the Electoral Count Act, which states that a petition signed by 20% of both Houses can contest votes if they were unlawfully certified. The consequence of this would mean that if Trump’s votes were not counted, Kamala Harris could possibly be elected president, despite losing both the Electoral College and popular vote.
Additionally, the authors reference testimonies from the January 6th House Select Committee, which they claim were misleading. They conclude that Democrats must act against counting Electoral College votes for a person disqualified by the Constitution.
The article criticized lacks persuasiveness and misrepresents facts, as Trump's significant recent victory reflects a public rejection of the claims made against him. The self-righteousness of arguing for an insurrection based on supposed insurrection claims shows a disconnect from reality.
The Hill is called out for publishing an inaccurate piece that could be intended to generate outrage and traffic, though it has not published opposing viewpoints regarding the fairness of the 2020 elections or related issues. The conclusion drawn is that The Hill represents a pro-Democrat agenda, contributing to a conspiracy against the 2024 elections, reflecting the thoughts of Democrats. They are seen as striving for credibility among their political allies rather than presenting factual information. This serves as a warning that Democrats continue to seek ways to hinder Trump’s potential return, indicating the necessity for vigilance among Trump and his team.
