'Get a speaker with a spine': Watch powerful Republican senator thrash Mike Johnson

U. S. Senator Rand Paul criticized House Speaker Mike Johnson, expressing a desire for a leader who takes a strong stance on federal budget issues. During an appearance on "Sunday Morning Futures," Paul talked about the debt ceiling, mentioning that he has never voted to raise it but would consider it under specific conditions. He proposed a plan to balance the budget in five years and stated that if Johnson presented a budget with a clear spending plan, he would support raising the debt ceiling. Paul emphasized the need for government reform due to the country's significant $36 trillion debt.

Paul mentioned that when conservatives refrain from voting, it allows liberals to take control, leading to decisions that increase debt. He suggested that instead of eliminating the debt ceiling, Johnson should put forth a reform plan that would unite conservatives and remove the need for Democratic votes. He believed that reducing spending is crucial for the country's future.

Later in the program, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich defended Johnson, praising his efforts and stating he was handling a challenging situation well. Gingrich highlighted Johnson's ability to reduce a lengthy bill from 1,500 pages to 136, and he criticized Republicans who were not fully supporting Johnson, stating they should recognize that they need to work together as a team given their narrow margins.

Gingrich urged Republicans to align after internal debates to ensure effective governance. He described Johnson's progress as a good example of constitutional processes in action and indicated that Johnson's partnership with former President Trump was beneficial. Gingrich pointed out that if Republicans can unite, Johnson and Trump would likely find success in their initiatives.

In another discussion, Sen. Paul expressed his approval of President-elect Trump's nominees for cabinet positions, stating he would support the majority right from the start. He predicted a swift confirmation process, highlighting his willingness to facilitate quick approvals through his committee. Paul expressed satisfaction with the nominees, saying some were exactly who he would have chosen himself.
