House Ethics Committee Chairman Michael Guest has declined to answer questions from The Gateway Pundit regarding the Committee's investigation into former Congressman Matt Gaetz. Recently, it was announced that the Committee plans to release findings from an investigation that many view as politically motivated against Gaetz, who has been cleared by the Department of Justice of any wrongdoing. The Committee’s secret vote to move forward with the report came despite previous decisions to not release it.
There has been ongoing pressure from House Democrats to publish the report, which they have been leaking selectively to the media. Pennsylvania Representative Susan Wild, a Democrat and member of the Ethics Committee, has been identified as a source of leaks related to the Gaetz report. Wild's actions are seen as a breach of her oath to confidentiality with the Committee. There are discussions among House Republicans to potentially censure Wild for her conduct.
Rep. Scott Perry expressed concerns about the ongoing investigation, highlighting that Ethics discussions should be confidential, and noted the importance of holding members accountable for leaking information. He questioned trust in the Ethics Committee when there are allegations of unethical behavior by its members and called for consequences for leaking information.
The investigation into Gaetz resumed amid his political challenges against former Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Gaetz has consistently denied any allegations of misconduct. After stepping back from consideration for Attorney General due to distractions related to the investigation, he is now set to host a nightly show on One America News Network.
Confronted by a reporter, Guest maintained his stance of not discussing anything related to the ongoing investigations, including whether it was acceptable for Wild to leak information. He was asked pointed questions about the meaning of ethics, particularly in relation to targeting political opponents, but repeatedly refrained from providing any answers. This lack of clarity and open dialogue raises questions regarding the Ethics Committee's integrity and how it handles its investigations.
