The town of Edison, New Jersey, has banned the display of items like American flags and the U. S. Constitution during city council meetings, claiming these displays are disruptive. This ban was implemented through a new local ordinance that also restricts how long residents can speak at meetings. Many residents believe the city is trying to silence concerns about how tax dollars are spent and issues of public safety. Maryann Hennessey, an Edison resident, expressed her frustration, stating that considering the American flag a prop is offensive and disrespectful.
During one meeting, Joel Bassoff was removed after he waved an American flag while speaking, with the council president affirming the rules against such displays. The new rules also prohibit residents from wearing costumes or masks without medical justification and allow for the removal of speakers deemed disruptive or too loud. Other residents questioned why the council is penalizing everyone for the actions of just a few, suggesting that this approach only increases anger and determination among citizens. Sue Malone-Barber pointed out that this conflict is making the situation worse for everyone involved.
