The Times, They Are A-Changin', and Mexico Gets It, Breaking Up Two Illegal Immigrant Caravans

President-elect Donald Trump has not yet taken office, but his election has already affected the situation in Mexico. Recently, Mexican immigration authorities broke up two small groups of migrants heading to the U. S. , according to activists. Some migrants were transported to cities in southern Mexico, while others received transit papers, allowing them to continue their journey.

This action follows Trump’s threat to impose a 25% tariff on Mexican goods unless Mexico does more to reduce migration to the U. S. However, the effectiveness of this measure is unclear since some migrants were still allowed to proceed. There is already concern regarding this issue, with Trump stating that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has committed to halting unauthorized migration. Sheinbaum also confirmed on social media that migrants are being cared for before reaching the border.

Activist Luis García Villagrán suggested that breaking up the caravans may be due to an agreement between the U. S. and Mexican presidents. Trump has already spoken with the Mexican president about migration.

The topic of illegal immigration was significant in the recent election. Trump and his campaign partner JD Vance focused on stopping illegal immigration, promising to close borders and enforce mass deportations, addressing a long-standing legal and humanitarian crisis.

Interestingly, the narrative also highlights U. S. leadership. While Joe Biden still retains the formal title of president, it seems that Trump is stepping into a role of influence in negotiations with other nations. He is already engaging with world leaders and encouraging them to take actions aligned with his priorities, as evidenced by Mexico's recent actions. This suggests that the international community is responding more to Trump than to Biden during this transitional period.
