Days after Donald Trump stated that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum agreed to stop migration into the United States or face a 25% import duty, Mexico responded by breaking up two migrant caravans. These caravans had around 4,000 people at their highest number. Some migrants were bused to southern cities in Mexico, while others received transit papers for 20 days of travel.
Migrant rights activist Luis García Villagrán suggested that Mexico's actions were part of an agreement with the U. S. President. Senator Joni Ernst thanked Trump for his efforts to secure the border, stating that the era of open borders is over.
The first caravan started near the Mexico-Guatemala border on November 5, coinciding with Trump's election. It traveled approximately 270 miles in four weeks before being dismantled in Tehuantepec, Oaxaca. Migrants reported being taken to various locations, including Acapulco, Morelia, and Oaxaca City.
The National Immigration Institute stated that migrants voluntarily accepted bus rides to places with medical assistance and where their migrating status would be reviewed, indicating they preferred this over risking their journey.
The second caravan reached the town of Tonala in Chiapas state, where authorities offered transit visas to the migrants. Additionally, Mexico's Supreme Court approved an injunction to create a public registry of detained migrants filed by the Jesuit Refugee Service and the Alaíde Foppa Legal Clinic.
