Ukrainian soldiers are increasingly deserting their posts, causing significant issues for the government in Kiev. Reports suggest that as many as 200,000 soldiers have deserted, with some Ukrainian officials stating that many troops are tired and facing severe shortages. Many have left their combat positions, which has made defensive lines weaker and led to territorial losses according to military commanders and soldiers.
The issue of desertions is growing, with prosecution rates for soldiers who do not report for duty rising sharply. In 2022, around 9,000 were prosecuted for desertion, which increased to 24,000 in 2023. By 2024, the number of prosecutions reached about 50,000 within just the first nine months. However, the actual numbers might be higher, as some officials speculate that the figure could be as high as 200,000. Many believe this problem stems from soldier fatigue as the conflict continues.
Kiev is also struggling with a substantial shortage of manpower due to both casualties and desertions. Reports indicate that the military lost a net total of 4,000 soldiers along the front lines in September alone. To address these shortages, the White House has suggested that Ukraine consider lowering the minimum age for military service to 18.
