Mexican Troops Seize Record Amount of Fentanyl Days After Trump Threatens Tariffs

Mexican troops recently made the largest fentanyl seizure in history, amounting to over a ton in Sinaloa. This comes shortly after President-elect Donald Trump announced plans to impose a 25 percent tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada if they do not take stronger action against illegal immigration and drug smuggling. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the significant seizure during a press conference.

Trump emphasized that the tariff would remain until both illegal drugs, particularly fentanyl, and illegal immigration are halted. Analysts believe the Mexican government has been controlling the timing of drug seizures, but Trump's pressure may have prompted Sheinbaum’s administration to enhance their crackdown on drug trafficking.

Sinaloa is home to the influential Sinaloa Cartel, known for smuggling vast quantities of drugs into the U. S. , including fentanyl. Following the recent operation, two individuals were arrested, and several weapons were also seized. Mexico's top security official, Omar Garcia Harfuch, stated that these enforcement actions would continue until violence in Sinaloa decreases.

In related news, Democratic senators are urging President Biden to create immigration policies that cannot be easily reversed by future administrations, and there is discussion about the accountability of cybersecurity officials following a significant Chinese hack targeting U. S. telecoms. There are also reports of Democratic donors threatening to withdraw support from Biden's presidential library due to dissatisfaction over a pardon for Hunter Biden.
