The French government has disbanded after millions of citizens rejected the World Economic Forum (WEF) agenda, prompting Prime Minister Barnier to lose a no-confidence vote on December 4th, 2024. A total of 331 votes against the government were cast, exceeding the 288 needed to force Barnier's resignation, making it necessary for President Macron to appoint a new premier.
Before the vote, opposition leader Le Pen criticized Barnier’s budget, claiming it was excessively focused on taxes. She asked where the money was going and stressed the need for accountability. Le Pen argued that voting against the budget was essential to prevent a disastrous policy. The head of the Socialist Party, Boris Vallaud, also opposed the budget, calling it “unjust and inefficient. ” Another opposition figure, Coquerel from France unbowed, criticized the government for a lack of compromises and lent support to the no-confidence motion.
Barnier acknowledged that the issues facing his government will still affect the next one, stating he wished money could be distributed even though there wasn't any. Following his resignation, Barnier’s cabinet will continue in a limited capacity until Macron appoints a new prime minister, but there is no set timeline for this process.
Possible candidates for the new prime minister include Bernard Cazeneuve, a former prime minister who could help divide the opposition; Sébastien Lecornu, a young defense minister and Macron loyalist; François Bayrou, a centrist and ally in parliament; and Jean Castex, a former prime minister known for his management skills.
In response to the government's uncertainty, Le Pen remarked on whether Macron should remain in office, suggesting he must consider the country's situation over his pride. Macron stated he intends to serve his full term until 2027, expressing pride in his electoral victories and commitment to the country.
The economic markets reacted to the news, as the euro rose before the vote but fell afterward. Analysts predicted an increase in the French 10-year bond yields above current levels, citing ongoing decision-making issues and a lack of financial stability.
