A leading Democratic figure is blaming “MAGA” Republicans for threatening Congressional Democrats during Thanksgiving, shortly after members of President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet received bomb threats at their homes. Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) accused Trump supporters of using violent threats, including bomb threats and swatting, a method of making fake emergency calls to provoke police responses.
Jeffries asserted that House Democrats will not be intimidated by violent threats, highlighting the need for Congress to ensure maximum protection for all members and their families. He described threats of violence against elected officials as unacceptable in a civilized society but did not mention that several Trump cabinet members were also targeted with threats.
Many of Trump’s cabinet picks, like Pete Hegseth for Secretary of Defense and Tulsi Gabbard for National Intelligence, received violent threats linked to pro-Palestinian messages. There is an ongoing narrative that the Democratic Party incites violence through its rhetoric and then shifts the blame onto “MAGA” supporters when violent incidents occur. The left-wing media has often portrayed Trump in a negative light, while blaming Republicans when violence touches the Democratic side, such as an assassination attempt on the incoming president during a rally.
This incident is not unique, as Trump and his administration have faced various threats, including assassination attempts and information leaks from Iranian hackers during Trump's 2024 campaign. Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe noted that such threats are not surprising for those in high-profile roles.
Democrats feel threatened by Trump’s administration as his cabinet choices show a strong loyalty to him at a time when other Republicans have distanced themselves. These individuals are perceived as committed to disrupting traditional norms within government departments and targeting corrupt practices. Trump's appointments reflect a strategy to surround himself with loyal supporters who did not doubt his ability to run for president again despite legal troubles, signaling his determination to change the status quo in Washington.
