Congressional Report: No Scientific Basis for Extended School Closures.

Following a two-year investigation, the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic released a  report  criticizing the prolonged closure of schools during the COVID-19 pandemic. The 520-page report claims these closures lacked scientific support. It discusses failures related to mask and vaccine mandates and the suppression of views, such as natural immunity, that did not match the policies of public health officials. The report argues that school closures were controversial and not supported by evidence, stating that children were not significant virus spreaders and were not at high risk for serious illness.

It points out the negative effects of these closures, such as learning loss, increased mental stress, and poorer physical health among children. The findings indicate that even early on, the CDC doubted that closing schools would help control virus spread, with data showing no major difference in transmission rates between closed and open school regions. The report highlights political influences on public health guidelines, criticizing CDC actions for incorporating recommendations from the American Federation of Teachers, which contributed to extended school closures. It also notes lasting declines in academic performance, especially for low-income and minority students, warning these setbacks will continue.
