President Joe Biden's administration is reportedly set to introduce new policies that would allow migrants to enter the U. S. illegally with less oversight. A report in the New York Post claims that an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) app will launch in New York City in early December. This app will let migrants avoid in-person check-ins at ICE offices, potentially making it easier for them to abscond. Insiders have called this plan "half-baked" and worry that it will lead to more asylum seekers fleeing without oversight.
The app, which will be part of a pilot program in select cities, will let illegal migrants check in with immigration officials via phone or computer while they await asylum proceedings. However, sources from the Department of Homeland Security indicate that the app is glitchy and unreliable. Even when functional, it does not check for past arrests or warrants, unlike the current in-person check-in system.
In addition to the app, the Biden administration plans to allow migrants to contest orders for electronic tracking while waiting for immigration appointments. They will also no longer have to check in with local ICE offices regularly. Critics argue that Biden's policies have led to a surge in illegal crossings at the southern border, creating long lines and backlogs at ICE.
Former Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Mark Morgan has criticized these last-minute changes as obstructive during the transition of power. He believes the outgoing administration is trying to create as many challenges as possible before leaving office. Trump’s incoming administration may face court challenges in attempting to overturn these new policies.
As of last year, ICE offices were fully booked with appointments for migrants released into the U. S. until October 2032. Since the start of the migrant crisis, over 223,000 migrants have arrived in New York City, with more than 58,000 still relying on taxpayer-funded shelters.
Looking forward, Trump’s new border czar is expected to detail how the military will be involved in mass deportations. Tom Homan, the former acting ICE director, clarified that military personnel would not be used for arrests on U. S. streets but rather for non-enforcement roles.
