Almost immediately after taking office as president, Donald Trump began issuing orders to secure the Southwest border and to shut down access to the CBP One app for migrants without visas. This quick action aligns with his immigration promises, which he believes are a significant concern for voters, even more so than inflation.
On January 5, 2023, the Biden-Harris White House released a fact sheet about the CBP One App. This app allowed noncitizens in Mexico seeking lawful entry into the U. S. to schedule an appointment rather than wait at the border. This initiative was termed the “CBP One app interview scheme,” but there is no legal basis for it in the Immigration and Nationality Act. Although the White House stated it was meant for migrants to initiate protection claims, CBP officers did not inquire if those attending appointments were seeking asylum. By the end of December, over 936,500 inadmissible applicants had used the app, with 95. 8 percent being allowed entry into the U. S. This led to nearly 900,000 illegal migrants being granted resettlement under the app before Trump’s administration discontinued it immediately after he took office.
The CBP One app website now states that as of January 20, 2025, its functionalities for undocumented aliens have been canceled. Following this announcement, responses on social media began to appear.
One well-known strategy from Trump’s first administration was the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), also called “Remain in Mexico. ” This policy was enacted to handle a surge of migrants entering illegally, especially families. Under MPP, migrants claiming asylum were sent back to Mexico while they awaited their hearings. The program was deemed successful, significantly reducing border encounters. However, President Biden opposed it and suspended MPP, leading to legal challenges. After these challenges, MPP returned to inactivity by June 2022.
In his inaugural speech, Trump indicated he may reinstate the MPP policy, which could help reduce illegal immigration again. The Mexican government has expressed that it does not share the same focus on this issue. Regardless, immigration remains a priority for Trump in his renewed administration.
