Colombia-Born Sen. Bernie Moreno Reveals the One Thing the Media Won’t Tell You About Trump’s Crackdown

During an interview on The Alex Marlow Show, Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-OH) discussed the mainstream media's portrayal of President Trump's actions regarding illegal immigration and Colombia. He pointed out that Colombian President Gustavo Petro had originally allowed two deportation flights from the U. S. to land in Colombia. However, when the planes arrived, Petro changed his mind and retracted permission due to the deported criminals being shackled, which Moreno argued was a necessary precaution.

Moreno criticized networks like CNN, claiming they misrepresent Trump's stance by suggesting he was disrespecting Latin Americans. He asserted that Colombia's government was actually complicit in allowing migrants to pass through their country, many of whom had criminal backgrounds. He praised Trump's administration for taking a strong approach by deporting these individuals back to Colombia and claimed there was an ongoing partnership in handling illegal immigration.

Moreno explained that notifications were sent to Colombia regarding the deportation flights and emphasized that permission was initially granted. He recounted that Petro's reactionretracting the permissionwas akin to thinking he was still dealing with the Biden administration. When Petro decided to send his presidential plane to collect the deported migrants, that move was seen as an escalation following Trump’s threats of tariffs and sanctions against Colombia.

In response to Petro's initial refusal to accept the deportation flights, Trump threatened to implement significant tariffs on Colombian goods and restrict U. S. visas for Colombian officials, which pressured the Colombian government into compliance. After negotiations, Petro eventually agreed to accept all Colombian citizens being deported, a change that Moreno highlighted as a key achievement.

Petro had previously accused the U. S. of treating Colombian migrants as criminals and demanded changes in how deported individuals were treated. Moreno rebuffed this criticism, maintaining that the U. S. has the right to deport those with criminal records. He concluded that Trump’s firm stance led to favorable outcomes for U. S. immigration policy and a reaffirmation of Colombia's obligation to accept deported citizens.
