Trump Signs an Executive Order to Overhaul or Abolish FEMA

On January 27, 2025, President Trump signed an executive order to potentially overhaul or abolish the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This order establishes a task force named the Federal Emergency Management Agency Review Council to assess FEMA and suggest changes, which may include its abolition, with Congress making the final decision.

The Council will include the Secretaries of Homeland Security and Defense and private sector experts. There have been claims that FEMA has neglected Republican areas during disasters, particularly following Hurricanes Helene and Milton. Trump has previously stated that FEMA is obstructing processes and has not effectively performed its duties in recent years.

Experts in disaster management agree that reforms are needed for FEMA. Trump mentioned that states should have the autonomy to handle disasters and access federal support when necessary. However, governors may resist these changes due to their limited resources.

Currently, President Trump has not appointed a leader for FEMA, and JD Vance has reportedly secured housing for displaced residents in Western North Carolina with assistance from the Army Corps of Engineers.
