Trump scores win as Colombia agrees to accept migrant flights in face of tariff threats

President Donald Trump achieved a victory when Colombia agreed to take back deported migrants from the U. S. after Trump threatened tariffs and penalties. White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt stated that Colombia would accept all illegal Colombian nationals returned from the U. S. , including on military flights. The announced sanctions would be held off unless Colombia failed to comply with the agreement.

Previously, Trump had imposed tariffs and restrictions after Colombia refused to accept flights for deporting illegal migrants. He pointed out that Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro, who is not popular in Colombia, had ordered that two repatriation flights be denied landing. Trump emphasized that this refusal could endanger U. S. national security and announced plans for immediate retaliatory measures, including a 25% tariff on imports from Colombia.

Petro had declined to accept the flights until there was a protocol to ensure the migrants' dignified treatment. In response, he later offered his presidential aircraft to transport the migrants returning from Honduras in a manner he deemed respectful. The Colombian government expressed its commitment to ensuring decent conditions for migrants being returned.
