Nature Preserve Poisoned After California Lithium Battery Facility Catches Fire, Scientists Say

A recent fire at a large lithium-ion battery storage facility in Northern California harmed a nearby nature reserve. High levels of nickel, manganese, and cobalt were detected in the soil near the Vistra Moss Landing Power Plant shortly after the fire on January 16. These heavy metals were found in soil samples collected by scientists, showing an increase compared to baseline measurements taken before the fire.

Although local officials and a company hired by the facility reported no increased pollutant levels, a Facebook group of nearly 3,000 people in nearby counties claimed to experience health issues like headaches and nausea linked to the fire. Dr. Ivano Aiello from San José State’s Moss Landing Marine Laboratories stated that soil tests showed heavy metal concentrations much higher than before the fire, suggesting a direct link to battery materials.

Despite local media coverage, the story has not gained national attention, potentially due to the facility's role in solar energy storage. Critics of nuclear power remain silent about the environmental damage caused by this energy source.
