Sanctuary Cities Were Always Anti-American

 Sanctuary cities, like New York City, Chicago, and Boston, are struggling as many migrants arrive due to open borders. While some Democrats claim these cities are meant to protect refugees, the author argues they were actually established to harm America. The sanctuary city movement began in the Reagan era, primarily to support leftist radicals fleeing civil wars in Latin America, rather than in response to humanitarian crises like the Holocaust or the Rwandan genocide.

The movement was launched by left-wing churches in 1980 and was initially focused on preventing the deportation of immigrants from Central America, whose countries were then in turmoil due to conflicts involving Marxist ideologies. These churches opposed U. S. support for anti-Communist governments and sought to push their agenda by framing the deportation of certain refugees as illegal and immoral. Their ultimate goal was to assist Marxist revolutions, not to help genuine refugees.

Activists involved in the sanctuary movement would aid migrants in crossing the border, leading to confrontations with the U. S. government that portrayed them as martyrs. San Francisco was the first city to declare itself a sanctuary, specifically targeting Central American migrants, rather than all refugees globally. The author's view is that the movement aimed to create chaos to disrupt U. S. foreign policy.

The illegal immigrant population increased significantly during the initial years of the sanctuary movement, contributing to rising crime rates. This movement eventually resulted in the 1986 amnesty, allowing millions of undocumented immigrants, which shifted the political landscape in places like California toward the Democratic Party.

A second wave of the sanctuary movement arose after the events of September 11, as leftists sought to protect groups they viewed as anti-American, especially in response to the Bush administration's policies on Islamic terrorism. The aftermath of the Patriot Act saw many cities, towns, and states refusing to cooperate with federal security measures as part of a broader trend against perceived governmental overreach.
