After US President Donald Trump pressured Denmark regarding Greenland, the country reacted by deciding to spend about $2. 05 billion to strengthen its military presence in the Arctic. Recently, Trump stated that Greenland is important for US security and urged Denmark to relinquish control of the territory. This push follows years of significant defense budget cuts in Denmark, which recently allocated 190 billion Danish crowns (around $26 billion) for military spending over the next decade, part of which is to enhance Arctic defense.
Currently, Denmark's military capabilities in Greenland are limited, having only a few outdated inspection vessels and minimal surveillance resources for monitoring an area much larger than France. As part of the new military investment, Denmark plans to fund three new Arctic navy vessels and increase its long-range surveillance drones to four, along with improved satellite surveillance, according to Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen.
