Johnson summoned to testify before Congress on Chicago's sanctuary city policies

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has been asked to testify before Congress about the city's sanctuary city policies. The House Committee on Oversight and Reform sent a letter to City Hall requesting his participation in a public hearing set for February 11. This hearing will look into the consequences of sanctuary policies in Chicago and three other cities: New York, Boston, and Denver. Concerns have been raised that these policies do not comply with federal law and have negatively affected the citizens of those cities.

The request comes after a recent ICE operation in Chicago that targeted about 300 individuals as part of a larger nationwide enforcement effort resulting in 956 arrests. Mayor Johnson has encouraged residents to be aware of their rights in response to these increased enforcement actions. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker criticized the ICE raids, stating that they target law-abiding individuals and emphasized the need for a path to citizenship for these people.

It is currently unknown whether Mayor Johnson will accept the invitation to testify. FOX 32 has attempted to reach him for comments but has not received a response yet. Similar letters were sent to the mayors of New York, Boston, and Denver, but their responses are also not yet known. The hearing will be crucial in discussing the impact of sanctuary city policies amid ongoing immigration enforcement actions.
