Putin Declares He Won't Negotiate With Zelensky As Ukrainian Leader Has Outlawed Peace Talks

Vladimir Putin has stated that he will not negotiate with Ukraine while Volodymyr Zelensky is in power, claiming Zelensky lacks legitimacy because of canceled elections. Putin expressed that if Zelensky wants to participate in talks, he would choose different representatives, but he emphasized the importance of having perfectly drafted agreements. Zelensky had previously enacted a law in 2022 that banned peace negotiations with Russia, and now Putin is asserting that Zelensky must first lift this ban to initiate discussions.

Zelensky, in response, has accused Putin of trying to manipulate the U. S. president, Donald Trump, in pursuing peace. The Institute for the Study of War pointed out that Putin is redirecting blame onto Ukraine for the ongoing conflict while making gains on the battlefield. Reports indicate that Ukraine's front lines are weakening, a fact recently acknowledged by The Economist.

In a recent interview, Putin claimed that negotiations began when Russia initiated its military operation, demanding that Ukraine relinquish territories of Lugansk and Donetsk, which he insists are now part of Russia and will not be returned. He also dismissed any potential deals that would pave the way for Ukraine's NATO membership. Putin appears to be stalling talks while Trump's team is likely discussing possible negotiation terms with Russian representatives.
