The 55th annual World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, is seeing many powerful world leaders skipping the event this year. Notable absences include Chinese leader Xi Jinping, Indian President Narendra Modi, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is the only G7 leader attending in person. Leiden University professor Jan Aart Scholte noted that attendees this year do not represent the major global players, as most heads of state from the G20 are absent.
Among those who are present, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa gave a speech, representing the country that currently holds the G20 presidency. Javier Milei from Argentina and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky are also in attendance. Milei previously criticized socialism in a speech last year, stating that the Western world is in danger due to socialism leading to poverty. He argued that government should not be seen as the solution but as a problem. This year, Milei returns with notable economic achievements. Trump is expected to give a speech that aligns with Milei's views.
While Trump and Milei may not fit into the traditional elite circle at the WEF, their influence is growing, with Trump being a key topic of discussion among attendees. Scholte commented that leaders of a liberal economy no longer dismiss opposing views as strongly as they once did. The WEF acknowledged the absence of many prominent leaders, stating that their commitments and responsibilities remain a priority for their governments and institutions throughout the year. The forum appears to reflect shifting dynamics in global leadership and thought.
