Pres. Trump Orders Declassification of JFK, RFK, MLK Jr. Assassination Files

On Thursday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to declassify all federal files related to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. , and Senator Robert F. Kennedy. The National Archives stated that these newly declassified documents represent only about three percent of the total records from these incidents, but details matter.

The executive order states that over 50 years after the assassinations, the government has not made all records public. Families and the American people deserve transparency. The order requires the director of National Intelligence (DNI) and the U. S. attorney general to present a plan for the full release of Kennedy's records within 15 days, while the deadlines for records on Dr. King and Robert Kennedy are 45 days.

Previously, Trump had indicated his intention to release these documents. In 2022, part of the JFK files was released, but 97% of the collection remained public. Trump's urgency may stem from having survived two assassination attempts himself.

He had promised to release JFK files during his first term but did not complete it. In 1992, Congress mandated that all assassination documents be released within 25 years. It is uncertain what the remaining three percent contains, but it is possible that no major new information will arise. Once all records are released, details will finally be made public for examination.
