CNN’s Scott Jennings dismissed the idea that a last-minute report on Defense Secretary nominee Pete Hegseth would affect his confirmation vote, calling it “a little like a smear job. ” The report alleged that Hegseth paid $50,000 to a woman who claimed he sexually assaulted her under a confidentiality agreement. During an interview on “The Situation Room,” Jennings stated he did not believe the report would change the minds of those who had already decided on Hegseth’s confirmation. He expected the vote to be close but predicted Hegseth would still be confirmed, noting he might lose some Republican support.
Jennings also mentioned that many Republicans felt the situation echoed the treatment of Justice Brett Kavanaugh during his nomination process. Hegseth himself, in a December interview, expressed similar feelings, stating he felt “Kavanaugh’d” by the allegations against him and warned that the Democrats would continue using anonymous and unverified claims to undermine him due to his perceived threat to their system.
