If the Coast Guard Commandant Can Be Fired for Pushing DEI, Can the USMC Commandant Be Fired for Lying?

President Trump ordered the firing of Coast Guard Commandant Linda Fagan for being unprepared and focusing too much on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs, as part of issues within the Biden administration. The acting secretary of Homeland Security announced her removal, acknowledging her long service, but also noting a loss of trust and failure to address security threats.

Fox News highlighted concerns with her emphasis on DEI over border security, suggesting that if such standards were applied broadly, many military leaders might also be dismissed. The discussion included a hearing featuring Pete Hegseth, who criticized DEI's negative impact on military readiness and proposed scaling back DEI programs if he became Defense Secretary.

During the Defense Writers Group forum, General Eric M. Smith stated he did not watch the hearing. He insisted that the Marine Corps does not implement DEI programs and emphasized a merit-based system where anyone can succeed based on their abilities. He cited examples of women succeeding in various roles, asserting that DEI is not part of the Marine Corps' approach.

However, the accuracy of Smith’s claims about the Marine Corps’ stance on DEI is questioned, considering that President Biden ordered the integration of DEI into military training. The text suggests that either Smith is unaware of this or is misrepresenting the truth, echoing past issues of honesty in military leadership.

Concerns are raised about the quickness of military leaders to align with new political instructions, contributing to ongoing military failures and the spread of DEI. There is frustration with military officers who do not accept accountability for their actions, indicating a deeper problem within the system that rewards career advancement over actual performance.

Ultimately, Smith's comments reflect a commitment to DEI despite claims to the contrary. The view is that while Fagan was fired for her focus on DEI, Smith should also face consequences for his misleading statements and his ongoing support for DEI initiatives within the Marine Corps.
