As barriers and parade bleachers are set up in Washington, D. C. , expectations rise for the incoming Trump administration to correct perceived issues from the Biden administration. Key concerns include the crisis at the southern border, transgender ideology affecting youth, and the use of government power against citizens.
During the confirmation hearing for President-elect Trump’s attorney general nominee, Pam Bondi, Senator Josh Hawley focused on the Biden Justice Department's attacks on people of faith. He asked Bondi if she would stop this government hostility that threatens Americans' rights, to which she agreed to protect Christians.
This issue has global significance. Reports show a rise in violence against Christians worldwide, with 380 million facing persecution in 2024, up 15 million from 2023. Nigeria has been identified as the most dangerous place for Christians, with nearly 10,000 killings in the past year.
When the U. S. government takes action against Christians at home, it encourages oppressive regimes abroad to increase their persecution. The previous Trump administration had designated Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern for religious freedom, but the Biden administration removed this status, leading to more violence against Christians.
The U. S. must protect religious freedom domestically to support believers globally, and the new administration is urged to prioritize this in foreign policy.
