On a Monday, during their last hours in office, former President Biden's team granted a blanket pardon to several close allies and family members, including Anthony Fauci, who was the former Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Fauci was pardoned for any crimes he may have committed from January 1, 2014, to the date of the pardon while serving as NIAID Director, on the White House Coronavirus Task Force, and as Biden’s Chief Medical Advisor. In a letter justifying the pardons, Biden stated that "baseless and politically motivated investigations" harm individuals and their families, regardless of any wrongdoing.
Biden’s argument for the pardons stands out as hypocritical because it reflects tactics used against figures like Trump to damage reputations. There are numerous troubling aspects of Fauci’s career, including accusations of secretive medical experiments on vulnerable populations, as highlighted in RFK Jr. ’s book, “The Real Anthony Fauci,” which mentions drug tests on HIV-positive children and inhumane experiments on animals.
Fauci's previous miscalculations regarding the dangers of various flu outbreaks and his inaccurate claims about COVID-19 significantly hurt his credibility. Early in the pandemic, Fauci asserted that cloth masks were ineffective, only to later advocate for universal mask mandates. He later claimed his earlier comments were intended to protect the mask supply for healthcare workers and expressed confusion over public distrust in his statements.
Additionally, Fauci called for nationwide lockdowns in early April 2020, which he later denied advocating. He warned against reopening states like Florida, which later proved to have less severe outcomes than anticipated. Public data revealed that children were not major spreaders of COVID-19, yet Fauci continued to support school closures and masking.
Fauci made several high-profile claims about the COVID vaccine efficacy that turned out to be incorrect. However, the issue isn’t poor judgments or bad advice, as these do not constitute criminal activity. The concern from the political class about investigations into Fauci likely stemmed from suspicion regarding his potential involvement in the origins of the COVID-19 outbreak.
Research referred to as "gain-of-function" could potentially create more dangerous viruses. An organization receiving funding through Fauci’s department had previously conducted gain-of-function research on coronaviruses at a lab in Wuhan, China. Despite no concrete evidence linking this research to the outbreak, U. S. connections to similar experiments remain unclear. The lack of investigation from Biden's DOJ prior to Fauci’s pardon raises suspicions about U. S. government involvement in the pandemic's origins.
Possibilities of a federal investigation could compel the media to reassess Fauci’s controversial actions and failures and could spark difficult questions regarding why a bureaucrat known for failures had such a fruitful career. These inquiries could reveal systemic issues within public health funding decisions, suggesting that failures were not merely mistakes but part of a larger effort benefiting certain political and financial interests, which would threaten the political establishment's image. Hence, Biden may have felt compelled to issue the pardon to shield Fauci from scrutiny.
