Al Sharpton is upset about companies ending their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs, particularly following Donald Trump's return to the presidency. He believes that this decision represents significant civil rights violations and parallels his fight for justice with leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks. Sharpton stated that DEI initiatives were necessary to address institutional racial discrimination in academia and corporations.
At a church event in Washington D. C. , Sharpton declared that if companies want to reverse the progress made through DEI, he would mobilize a response similar to what Dr. King and Rosa Parks did during the civil rights movement. He announced that his organization, the National Action Network (NAN), will establish a council to boycott companies that have removed their DEI commitments. Over the next 90 days, the council will review which companies are failing to meet their DEI promises and will examine their profits.
He mentioned that two companies will be targeted for a boycott by Black Americans in the spring. There is an indication that this group of consumers is significant, as their buying power is projected to be around $1. 7 trillion by 2030. Meanwhile, it remains uncertain if Black Americans will support Sharpton's call for a boycott.
Since taking office, Trump has focused on eliminating DEI initiatives that aim to reduce white dominance in influential positions. Recently, he instructed that federal staff dedicated to diversity initiatives be placed on paid leave as part of broader plans to eliminate such programs entirely. This includes rescinding affirmative action policies that were in place to prevent race-based discrimination in federal contracting and public universities.
