After a challenging initial roll call, enough Republican U. S. representatives voted for House Speaker Mike Johnson, resulting in his re-election with a close 218-216 vote. In his acceptance speech, Johnson promised to focus on fiscal responsibility, border security, extending tax cuts from 2017, ending electric vehicle mandates, promoting national defense, and reducing the power of the administrative state.
Johnson emphasized a coalition that seeks to reject "America last" policies and pledged that Congress will listen to the people. He stated that their goals are about the USA, not about party labels. However, some Republicans still doubted Johnson’s ability to resist Democratic pressures. U. S. Rep. Chip Roy from Texas warned that the focus must be on delivering President Trump's agenda and expressed concerns about Johnson's clarity on these issues.
During the first vote, three Republicans voted for other members, initially putting Johnson at risk. After a brief recess, two of the holdouts changed their votes and helped secure Johnson’s win. Roy, along with other Republicans, stated there is no margin for error for Johnson. They voted for him to support Trump's agenda and stressed the need for fiscal responsibility. Following the election, President Trump praised Johnson and expressed confidence that he would be a great Speaker, promising that America would benefit from his leadership.
