Republicans in Congress, led by Senator Ted Cruz from Texas, proposed a resolution for a constitutional amendment to limit the terms of Congress members. The amendment suggests that U. S. senators can serve only two six-year terms, while House members can serve up to three two-year terms. The resolution states that once passed and ratified by the states, the changes would take effect within seven years.
Under this amendment, after serving three terms, a House member would not be eligible for reelection, and a senator who has served two terms would not be able to run for the Senate again. Cruz believes that term limits are essential to address issues in Washington, D. C. , promoting the idea of a government of citizen legislators who serve temporarily.
The proposal has support from several Republican senators and a companion resolution introduced by Representative Ralph Norman in the House. Norman emphasized that elected positions should be a short-term public service role, not a lifelong career. Changing the Constitution requires a significant process, needing two-thirds support in both houses of Congress and ratification by 38 states.
