North Carolina Supreme Court Blocks State From Certifying Democrat Incumbent Justice Riggs as Winner of Election as GOP Challenges Shady Ballots

The North Carolina Supreme Court recently made a decision not to certify Democrat incumbent justice Allison Riggs as the winner of her race against GOP challenger Jefferson Griffin. This decision was made with a 5-1 vote amid challenges regarding the election's integrity, specifically over the counting of approximately 60,000 ballots. The race was very close, with Riggs initially behind but later taking a lead after late votes were counted, bringing the final tally to Riggs with 2,770,818 votes and Griffin with 2,770,193 votes.

The race went to a recount due to the narrow margin of fewer than 10,000 votes, which is the threshold necessary for a recount in North Carolina. Griffin raised concerns about the legitimacy of the late-counted ballots and is pursuing legal action to ensure that "every legal vote is counted. " He believes protecting election integrity is vital for the democratic process.

RNC Chairman Michael Whatley backed Griffin in filing protests over these disputed ballots and expressed concerns about the State Board of Elections' management of the election, describing them as inconsistent and non-transparent. The case surrounding the election results has been moving between state and federal courts with various appeals and decisions, including a federal judge sending the case back to North Carolina.

Recently, the North Carolina Supreme Court granted Griffin's request, temporarily preventing the certification of Riggs as the winner while the dispute is being settled. The court's majority has taken this step to allow for further review of the challenges raised by Griffin and the RNC. There was dissent from the only other Democrat on the Supreme Court, Anita Earls, who argued against interfering with the electoral process established by state law.

At this moment, Griffin trails Riggs by 734 votes, but he and his supporters are committed to ensuring that all aspects of the election are scrutinized and that the integrity of the election is upheld. Riggs has recused herself from the case, and the electoral dispute continues to develop as the legal actions unfold.
