Matt Gaetz says he is 'starting to think' about a bid for Florida governor in 2026

Former Florida GOP Representative Matt Gaetz is considering running for governor of Florida in 2026. He expressed his intent to reflect and discuss his aspirations with his wife before making a formal decision. Gaetz, known for his strong conservative views, stated he has a clear vision for addressing Florida's insurance issues, emphasizing that it should not involve giving too much power to the insurance industry. He believes if he runs, he would be the most pro-consumer candidate within the Republican Party.

Despite facing personal controversies, including allegations of inappropriate relations with a minor, Gaetz thinks these claims will not hinder his chances in the race. He mentioned that such accusations have been leveled against him for years and have not affected his previous election success.

Gaetz is the first candidate to announce potential interest in the governorship, but other Florida politicians, including GOP Representative Byron Donalds and Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson, are also speculated to be considering their own runs. Current Governor Ron DeSantis cannot seek reelection due to term limits.
