The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) intends to clear 420 acres of trees from a state forest to construct a solar farm, as reported by MLive.com. A high-ranking state official confirmed this plan. The land is part of a larger initiative where 4,000 acres of public land across Michigan will be leased to increase revenue from hunting and fishing licenses and to boost renewable energy production, which the state lacks.
This solar initiative may start just west of Gaylord, and DNR officials have recently examined 1,200 acres of public trust land in Otsego County to assess its suitability for solar arrays due to its proximity to a power transmission line. Additionally, Chris Martz, a meteorology student, shared a chart indicating that nuclear power generates more energy on less land compared to solar and wind.
Michigan has previously announced intentions to cease coal production in favor of solar energy.
