Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has expressed her readiness to accept millions of illegal immigrants who may face deportation under the new U. S. administration. In her daily press briefing, she stated that Mexico would be willing to take in those the U. S. does not return to their home countries, indicating that they have a plan for this process but did not provide specific details.
Sheinbaum, who was recently elected, had previously been uncertain about whether Mexico would cooperate with deportations of Mexicans and other foreigners illegally residing in the U. S. Her government is reportedly creating an app to inform illegal aliens in the U. S. about potential deportation threats. According to the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the app will notify the nearest consulate of imminent detention, alert selected family members, and ensure that due process is followed.
Juan Ramon De la Fuente, Mexico's secretary of foreign affairs, emphasized that they aim to protect the human rights of their citizens according to international law. He added that the app would allow users to send an alert to the nearest consulate if they find themselves at risk of detention.
Mexico's hesitance to assist the U. S. with deportations is partly due to the economic benefits that its migrants provide. In 2023, Mexican migrants in the U. S. sent back around $63. 3 billion in remittances, which marked a significant increase from the previous year.
