Election officials in all 50 states urged to halt non-citizen voter registration: ‘Time to act is now’

A conservative legal group, America First Legal (AFL), has urged officials in every state to enforce laws preventing non-US citizens from registering or voting in elections. In a letter to chief elections officers, secretaries of state, attorneys general, lieutenant governors, and governors, AFL requested the use of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) data to verify immigration statuses on voter rolls and remove non-citizens.

The National Voter Registration Act of 1993 does not require proof of US citizenship for welfare benefit applicants, making it easier for non-citizens to register. Illegally registered non-citizens have been discovered in recent audits and investigations, although not in large enough numbers to affect election results. However, with an anticipated 8 million more migrants by October 2023, the potential for illegal voting increases.

AFL President Stephen Miller accused the Biden administration of attempting to sabotage the 2024 election through potential mass illegal alien voting. The National Voter Registration Act of 1993 and Help America Vote Act of 2002 require states to ensure accurate voter rolls, which can be accomplished using DHS' Person Centric Query System database. This database allows agency employees to verify citizenship status using only a name and date of birth, making it easier for states to maintain accurate voter rolls and prevent non-citizen voting.
