House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed confidence in reelection while aiming for significant government spending cuts, starting with President Biden’s green energy initiatives and student loan forgiveness. In an interview, Johnson indicated that Congress has a limited margin to work with but believes "significant" cuts can be achieved using the budget reconciliation process, which requires only a majority for tax, spending, and debt limit legislation. He emphasized the need to reduce the size of government, stating it is too large and ineffective.
Johnson noted that while essential programs like Social Security should be preserved, he aims to target non-mandatory discretionary spending, particularly the Biden student loan bailout, which he estimates could save $200 billion. He mentioned that reversing aspects of the Democrats' policies from the past four years will yield substantial savings. Johnson described the upcoming budget review process as lengthy and detailed but believes the effort will be worthwhile in the end.
The vote on these budget measures is scheduled for 12 p. m. Friday.
