In a recent move, the Biden administration has introduced new climate rules that ban most gas-powered tankless water heaters. The Department of Energy did not publicly announce these regulations, which are aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions. As a result, around 40% of current models will be taken off the market by 2029. Consumers will have to choose between more expensive or less efficient options.
The average cost for new water heaters is expected to increase by about $450, impacting low-income and senior households who rely on affordable models. This regulatory change follows the recent victory of President-elect Donald Trump, who plans to repeal many of Biden's climate policies to enhance energy production and support economic growth. These water heater regulations are part of a broader effort targeting household appliances, like gas stoves and refrigerators, to cut carbon emissions and encourage the use of electric alternatives.
Critics, such as Ben Lieberman from the Competitive Enterprise Institute, argue that this ban will eliminate affordable options and reflects a bias against natural gas. The American Gas Association may pursue legal action against the regulations, claiming they conflict with the Energy Policy and Conservation Act. Frank Windsor of Rinnai America also opposes the rules, highlighting the negative impact on higher-efficiency products and the risk to their recent investments.
