A new report outlines how millions of taxpayer dollars are spent on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in K-12 schools across the U. S. Critics argue that this spending takes resources away from essential educational goals. The report by Parents Defending Education (PDE) highlights many examples of how DEI initiatives are funded by taxpayers.
Since President Joe Biden took office, PDE notes that 30 grants worth over $32 million have been granted, focusing on DEI efforts in the classroom. These grants either reference diversity, equity, or inclusion or explain how the projects aim to help specific demographic groups. Furthermore, the report mentions significant funding for education grants that support similar initiatives, including money for consultants advocating for critical race theory (CRT). CRT suggests that the U. S. is founded on and continues to be shaped by racism.
Funding for DEI or CRT is often concealed under complex language and integrated into other programs like Social Emotional Learning. The report provides examples, such as a grant of $1,688,668 for a project addressing community policing and trauma in schools. Other examples include various projects related to LGBTQIA+ issues and racial equity. PDE's findings reflect broader trends of federal investment in DEI initiatives beyond education, affecting sectors like the military and FEMA, which lists equity as a primary strategic goal.
