House GOP accuses Liz Cheney of tampering with J6 witness, ask FBI to investigate criminality

The House Administration Oversight Subcommittee, led by Rep. Barry Loudermilk, released an interim report on the January 6 Capitol riot, claiming the attack was preventable due to intelligence and security failures. The report requests an investigation into former Rep. Liz Cheney regarding alleged witness tampering. It asserts that Cheney likely broke several federal laws by secretly communicating with Cassidy Hutchinson, a witness, without her attorney's knowledge, which is seen as a violation of witness tampering laws.

Furthermore, the report criticizes Hutchinson for possibly providing false testimony at the hearings, which Cheney supposedly encouraged. Loudermilk stated that existing evidence warrants an FBI investigation into Cheney for violating laws against perjury. Cheney has countered the claims, arguing that the report misrepresents the facts and overlooks substantial evidence presented by the January 6 Committee, which included testimony from various Republican witnesses about former President Donald Trump's actions on that day.

In addition to the allegations against Cheney, the report suggests collusion between Special Counsel Jack Smith and the January 6 Committee as evidenced by the sharing of unredacted documentation that was not properly archived. Loudermilk's report highlights significant failures of the Select Committee, including not preserving important evidence and making noteworthy changes to witness testimonies following consultation with Cheney. It also points out that then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi did not ensure proper security measures were in place at the Capitol and that delays occurred in deploying the National Guard, despite orders from Trump.

Loudermilk's letter to Congress urges a return to principles of transparency and accountability in government, warning that Americans deserve a government that is small and accountable. He expresses concern that partisan politics have led Congress away from these ideals. The report concludes by calling for a reassessment of how the January 6 events were handled to restore public trust in governmental processes.
