Lawyers for Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer, can now examine autopsy heart and fluid samples from George Floyd's medical examination. US District Judge Paul Magnuson approved this request, as Chauvin's team claims a heart condition contributed to Floyd's death. Floyd was found to have fentanyl in his system at the time of his arrest for allegedly passing a counterfeit bill.
The judge supported the decision, stating that the evidence could provide insights into Floyd's cause of death. Chauvin was convicted for kneeling on Floyd's neck, which prosecutors argued was fatal. His conviction led to significant protests and riots in 2020, causing billions in damages nationwide. Chauvin received a 21-year prison sentence and is seeking to overturn his conviction, claiming ineffective legal representation. Other officers involved also received sentences, with Tou Thao getting four years and nine months, J. Alexander Kueng receiving three-and-a-half years, and Thomas Lane sentenced to three years.
