Several low-polling Democratic candidates in the presidential race, including former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper and former Texas Rep. Beto O'Rourke, are being urged by party leaders to quit the contest and run for the U.S. Senate in their home states instead. Mr. Hickenlooper is expected to announce today that he will drop out of the race, and he will make a decision about a Senate run soon.
He has so far resisted calls to oppose Republican Sen. Cory Gardner by various Democratic party leaders, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York, though his reluctance has softened in recent weeks and he now won't rule out a Senate run.
Should low-polling presidential candidates stay in the 2020 race or pivot for Senate seats? Why?
Were he to enter the Senate race, Mr. Hickenlooper would face a number of well-funded opponents who didn't wait to launch their own bids.
"These are people who want to run for Senate, not people who are looking at the Senate as a consolation prize," said Becky Bond, a former adviser to Mr. O'Rourke who this week launched a new organization called Action PAC that plans to spend $5 million to help Democrats win the Senate.
Mr. O'Rourke, who was also wooed by Mr. Schumer, would face stiff competition in the Texas Senate primary, where M.J. Hegar-an Air Force veteran who lost a suburban congressional race by about three percentage points in 2018-has attracted significant support.
If Mr. Hickenlooper does enter the Senate race, he can expect other candidates to pound him for his dismissive comments about legislating, including when he told Politico in February that he was "Not cut out to be a senator."
