Hong Kong's pro-democracy demonstrators braved torrential rain to hold their largest rally in weeks, a show of strength led by more moderate protest leaders who advocated peaceful resistance to Beijing's tightening grip on the city and sought to ramp up pressure on officials to respond to their demands.
In June, there were two similarly massive protests against a proposed extradition bill-which would have allowed people in Hong Kong to be sent to China for trial-that brought the city to a standstill.
Beijing has taken a tougher line in recent weeks, accusing some protesters of resorting to near-terrorist acts, demanding Hong Kong police crack down hard and insisting that those involved in violent protests be severely punished.
Protesters take part in an anti-government rally in Victoria Park, Hong Kong, billed as peaceful and rational to contrast with recent demonstrations.
"The police are imposing unnecessary conditions on a peaceful protest," said Bonnie Leung, the vice-convener of the Civil Human Rights Front, a collection of civil society and pro-democracy groups that organized today's protest.
Many protesters expressed frustration with Hong Kong's police, whom they accuse of using excessive force against demonstrators in previous rallies and inhibiting attempts at peaceful protest.
Protesters have established five demands from the Hong Kong government, which include full universal suffrage as well as an independent inquiry into police conduct.
