Most Americans Believed This Liberal Lie on Tax Day

Yesterday was tax day - and in a media climate where 90% of Trump related coverage is negative, it's to little surprise that most Americans were unaware that they received a tax cut.

While only 5% of households paid more in tax under the Trump tax plan, only 17% of Americans believed their taxes were down this year.

Even among Trump supporters, while 6% of them believed they paid more to the IRS under the Trump tax cut, only 36% believe that they received a cut.

I've written on this in the past, and the numbers on the average refund in 2018 vs. 2017 have varied as the year progressed, but that's irrelevant because there is no connection between someone's tax refund and their tax rate.

Since the Trump tax cuts reduced the percentage of taxes withheld from each pay check, people saw their tax cuts in the form of their checks every week, not in a lump sum over the year.

Before the Trump tax cuts, the bottom 80% of income earners paid roughly 33% of all federal income taxes, but received 35% of the benefits from the Trump tax cuts.

The top 1% paid 27% of all federal taxes, and received only 21% of the tax cut, according to the center-left Tax Policy Center.
