Iranian Tanker Heads to Greece After Leaving Gibraltar

The Iranian tanker released by Gibraltar was sailing to Greece, according to ship-tracking data, as Tehran warned the U.S. against targeting the vessel after a last-minute attempt to seize it in the British overseas territory.

The tanker left Gibraltar's waters around 11 p.m. local time Sunday after the territory's Justice Ministry rejected a warrant from the U.S. Justice Department seeking its seizure for alleged violations of American sanctions.

On Monday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi said Tehran had warned the U.S. against any new attempt to seize the Iranian tanker.

The Iranian tanker's release from Gibraltar is a setback for U.S. attempts to enforce American sanctions in international maritime waters.

An Iranian lawmaker indicated the Stena Impero wouldn't be released until the Iranian tanker reached its destination.

"The British should help to end the crisis until Iran's tanker reaches its destination," Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh, a member of parliament's national security and foreign affairs committee, was quoted as saying by the semiofficial ISNA news agency.

The U.K. and Iran didn't say if the release of the Iranian tanker was linked to the British-flagged vessel's freedom.
