Amazon to hire 1,000 employees in Greenwood

In the next month or two, 1,000 employees will come to work in Greenwood, making Amazon the largest manufacturing employer - and one of the largest employers - in Johnson County.

Amazon officials announced Wednesday hiring has started at its new Greenwood facility, and employees will report to work in the coming months, but the company would not specify an opening date.

The mostly factory jobs will pay at least $15 an hour given that Amazon raised its minimum wage around the same time the company announced it would be building a facility in Greenwood.

Amazon announced in October that it was planning to open the massive, 615,000-square-feet receive center in Greenwood, one of only a few around the country.

At the time, Amazon officials said the new facility would bring 1,250 jobs to Greenwood.

Amazon will fill about 250 additional jobs in 2020, he said.

Amazon is investing $45 million in real property improvements and $35 million in equipment.
